How to Remove a Flow Restrictor From Your Showerhead

To see if there is a flow restrictor device limiting the water usage in your shower, you will need to use a pair of pliers or a wrench to take the showerhead apart. To get to the flow restrictor you will likely need to first remove the filter screen using the end of a paperclip (be sure to put the filter back when you are finished). Then you can remove the flow restrictor. This piece is a plastic disc that covers the shower head inlet. Some homeowners may find that they only need to remove the center of the restrictor to get the results they need.

Remember that when you remove this piece, you are allowing more water to flow through your pipes, which will likely increase utility bills.

Why Is there a Flow Restrictor on My Shower Head?

Not sure what a flow restrictor does or who put it there in the first place? You will find that many newer showerheads come with a flow restrictor to help homeowners avoid wasting water. The flow restrictor is designed to reduce the water flow in a shower head to 2.5 gallons per minute. The National Energy Act is responsible for this regulation. While all showerhead manufacturers must include the flow restrictor in their products, it is up to the consumer whether they decide to keep this piece intact.

The flow regulator is typically a white plastic disk with a small hole in the middle of it. Before coming out of the showerhead, your water has to pass through that small opening. By removing the flow restrictor, you can significantly improve your shower water pressure!
