HVAC Apprentice Program

Building the Next Generation of HVAC Professionals

A successful HVAC career starts with a strong foundation. That’s why T.E. Spall & Son developed an intensive 10-week Apprentice Program to teach the fundamentals of HVAC maintenance through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on training, and in-the-field experience.

Classroom Instruction Hands-On Training In-The-Field Experience

This isn’t just about learning what’s inside an HVAC system. It’s about understanding how it works, how to take care of it, and how to know when it’s doing what it’s supposed to do.

The goal is simple: give our apprentices the knowledge and practical skills they need to confidently maintain HVAC systems and continue building their skills toward becoming a service technician.

The Curriculum

What You’ll Learn

The Apprentice Program focuses heavily on HVAC maintenance and understanding the systems you’ll encounter in the field. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the most common types of residential HVAC equipment, including how the different components work together to heat and cool a home.

01

Build Customer Service & Soft Skills

The technical work is only half the job. Apprentices also learn the skills that come with working in someone’s home every day: showing up on time, communicating clearly, listening to the customer, and explaining what you found in plain language.

You’ll practice how to introduce yourself, respect the home you’re working in, answer questions honestly, and work alongside the rest of the team. These are the skills that turn a good technician into one customers ask for by name.

02

Understand HVAC Safety

HVAC equipment has a lot of built-in safety features, and apprentices learn all about them. You’ll learn what these controls are designed to do, how they protect the equipment and the people in the home, and how to safely work with HVAC systems in the field.

Safety isn’t just about following procedures. It’s about understanding the equipment well enough to recognize when something isn’t right.

03

Use Tools & Diagnostic Equipment

You’ll get hands-on experience with the tools, meters, testing equipment, and diagnostic processes HVAC professionals use every day.

More importantly, you’ll learn what to test, why you’re testing it, and what the results are telling you. It’s not enough to know how to use a meter. You need to understand what the numbers mean and what to do with that information.

04

Test System Performance

How do you know if an HVAC system is really working properly? You test it.

Apprentices learn what to measure, what those measurements should look like, and how to recognize when a system isn’t operating the way it should.

You’ll start learning to look at the whole system—not just one part—and figure out how everything is working together.

05

Understand System Efficiency

You’ll learn what it takes for an HVAC system to operate efficiently and why regular maintenance matters.

Equipment condition, airflow, system performance, and other factors all play a role. We’ll teach you how those pieces fit together so you can help a system do its job without working harder than it needs to.

06

Learn Airflow & Ductwork

Airflow is easy to overlook but it’s the key to system performance.

You’ll learn why proper airflow is so important to comfort and system performance, along with the fundamentals of ductwork and how the distribution system affects the way an HVAC system operates.

07

Perform HVAC Maintenance

You’ll learn our process for properly maintaining a heating and cooling system, from inspecting components to cleaning, testing, and identifying potential issues before they become bigger problems.

The goal isn’t just to keep a system running. It’s to make sure it’s running safely, efficiently, and the way it was designed to.

08

Explore Indoor Air Quality

Your HVAC system does more than heat and cool a home. It also plays an important role in the quality of the air inside it.

Apprentices learn about the factors that affect indoor air quality and the equipment and solutions that can help improve the comfort and health of the air inside the home.

More Than Classroom Training

This is intensive, hands-on training. Apprentices don’t just learn concepts from a textbook; they get opportunities to work with equipment, practice what they’ve learned, and develop the skills they’ll use in real-world situations.

Our instructors focus on teaching not only what to do, but why it matters. Understanding how a system works—and why it responds the way it does—is what helps turn someone who knows the steps into someone who can actually think like a technician.

And yes, you’ll probably get a little dirty along the way. That’s part of the job. Crawl spaces, attics, tools, equipment, and spiders are all part of the learning experience. If you’re looking for a career where you never have to fit into small spaces or be uncomfortably hot/cold, this isn’t it.

Taking Care Of The Customer

Learning the T.E. Spall & Son Way

There’s another important part of becoming a T.E. Spall technician: learning how we take care of our customers.

When a T.E. Spall technician walks into someone’s home, we’re not just there to work on an HVAC system. We’re a guest in their home, and we treat it that way. We respect their property, communicate clearly, and aim to provide a service that is genuinely valuable and helpful.

Our customers have come to expect that from us. With thousands of 5-star reviews, we’ve built a reputation for providing an experience people appreciate. In fact, many of our customers look forward to seeing their favorite technician when it’s time for the twice-a-year maintenance.

That’s something we’re proud of—and something we’ll teach you.

Apprentices will learn the T.E. Spall & Son maintenance process, including how we approach a maintenance visit, what we look for, how we communicate what we find, and how we help customers understand the condition and performance of their equipment.

You’ll also learn that great customer service isn’t just about being friendly. It’s about being professional, respectful, knowledgeable, and helpful. It’s about taking the time to answer a customer’s questions, explaining what you find in a way that makes sense, and leaving their home with the same care and respect you had when you walked through the door.

Taking care of the equipment is the job. Taking care of the customer is the T.E. Spall & Son way.

Who Does Well Here

The Right Foundation for a Career in the Trades

You don’t need to walk into the Apprentice Program knowing everything about HVAC. That’s what the program is for.

Our best apprentices are curious, dependable, hard-working, willing to ask questions, and genuinely interested in learning a skilled trade. They enjoy solving problems, working with their hands, and figuring out how things work.
