What is the Federal Geothermal Tax Credit?

In 2008, Congress enacted the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008. This act offers a onetime tax credit of 30 percent of the total investment for homeowners who install residential ground loop or ground water geothermal heat pumps. A credit of 10 percent of the total investment is also available (no maximum) for a commercial system installation.

The federal geothermal tax credit can be obtained for installing any ENERGY STAR certified geothermal heating and cooling system and is guaranteed until December 31, 2016.
