Signs It’s Time to Upgrade Your Home Heating Unit

No matter what type of heating system you have in your home, you’ll need to maintain it throughout its lifespan. However, when repairs get more frequent, or your heater is aging, it may be time to upgrade your heating system to something new.

How to Know When You Need a Heating Upgrade

When deciding whether to upgrade your heating system, a good place to start is with the age of your current one. Different types of furnaces have different lifespans, so you’ll want to be familiar with yours. In general, gas furnaces last 15 to 20 years, while electric ones typically have a lifespan of 20 to 30 years.

If your furnace is aging, that is the first sign you may need an upgrade. However, there are a lot of other things you may notice when a furnace replacement may be imminent. Here are some strong indications it’s time to upgrade your home heating system:

Your Indoor Temperature is Uneven

This condition could mean a few things. If your furnace is younger, it might mean some rooms have blocked vents, or your system needs cleaning. However, especially if you have an older heater, uneven temperatures can mean your heater is struggling to meet your needs.

This struggle means your furnace is working harder than it should to heat your home, which can also drive up your energy bill. A heating replacement will cost more upfront, but it will ensure even temperatures and can save you money on your monthly bill.

Your Heater is Running Constantly

If your heater is running nonstop, it’s probably working harder than it should. Similarly, if your furnace can’t easily match the temperature on your thermostat, it’s not powerful enough for your home.

This condition may mean your furnace is too small or too old to keep working how it used to. Either way, a heating system upgrade is likely in your future.

You Notice Strange Sounds or Odors

When your furnace is failing, you may notice strange sounds or smells. If you hear clunking or banging noises, you should have your system inspected, as some noises can mean there’s a safety risk.

The same can be said from strange odors coming from your furnace, which you should never ignore. As an experienced and trusted HVAC contractor, we can tell you if there’s anything to be concerned about and make heating replacement recommendations.

Your Air Quality has Declined

You may also notice that the air in your home smells worse or is overly dry or damp. All of these things can be related to your heater, as air cycles through it constantly. You may only need something simple, like a new filter, but if your heater is over ten years old, it may also be nearing the end of its lifespan. A replacement may be necessary to improve your indoor air quality and keep your home safe.

If you notice any of the above signs, upgrading your home heating unit may be the best solution. Upgrading your system will cost more than heating repair, but you will have a unit you can rely on, and you will likely save money on your heating bills too.
