Why Doesn’t My AC Get Cold

AC not keeping you cool like it should? This is a common problem that thousands of homeowners experience every year. There are a number of reasons for this occurring and unless you have experience repairing air conditioning systems, diagnosis of the cause should be left to a trained HVAC technician.

Some of the most common causes for your AC not getting cold are:

Low or Empty Refrigerant

In most instances, the cause of your AC system not getting cold is lack of refrigerant. If your system is out of coolant, it cannot remove heat from the air, so the air circulated in the home is left unconditioned.

If this is your problem, be skeptical of “stop leak” products that some shops advertise. These can do serious and permanent damage to your cooling system. Instead, call a reputable heating and cooling company to fix the problem.

It is important to note that if your system is low or out of refrigerant, you have a leak. Refrigerant does not deplete over time. It exists in a closed system and lasts forever unless a leak occurs. To permanently fix the problem, you need to have the cause of the leak discovered and repaired.

Faulty or Malfunctioning Compressor

The compressor is a critical piece of your air conditioning system. This part is responsible for pushing cold air from the condenser to the vent. If air is blowing from the vent, but it is not cold, it is possible that the compressor is malfunctioning or misaligned.

If this is your problem, this will require professional assistance. The components in a compressor are very sensitive and its repair should be left to a trained and experience HVAC technician.

Faulty or Malfunctioning Condenser

The condenser is what actually cools the air in your air conditioning system. If the condenser has stopped working properly, the air coming out of the condenser will cool. Condensers work by removing the heat from the air, so a condenser that is working properly will be blowing warm air outside and returning cool conditioning air back into the home.

Like the compressor, the condenser is very sensitive and repair work should be left to a professional. Attempting to repair the condenser unit yourself could result in further damage to the system and more expensive repairs.

Dirt Air Filters

Believe it or not, the air filters in your home can actually contribute to your air conditioner not blowing cold air at the rate it should. Dirty filters will block the flow of air, resulting in a lower than normal flow of cool conditioned air back into the home. Check your air filters and replace them if they appear to be too dirty.

If the problem persists after you have replaced your filters, the problem is likely one of the issues addressed above. Contact an AC repair professional for diagnosis and repair.
