How to Prepare Your Furnace for the Winter

Even though we’re still seeing the beautiful fall colors here in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, they are a reminder that winter is just around the corner. While you may be enjoying open windows and fresh air right now, soon you will be shutting up the house and switching on the furnace. Before you do, give it a little tender love and care to make sure it’s ready for winter. Here are some steps to ensure your furnace is ready to deliver reliable service all winter long.

1. Change the Filter

Unless you just did, fall is the time to change your furnace filter. This should be done every one to three months. If the furnace is dirty, or if the filter hasn’t been replaced in a while, it needs to be swapped out with a new one. A a dirty furnace filter will keep your system from running efficiently.

2. Clean Around the Furnace

It’s easy to start storing things near the furnace when you’re cleaning up in the summer, but this can pose a fire risk. Make sure that nothing is being stored near the furnace and sweep around it to ensure that there is no dust or debris that could clog up the filter too quickly.

3. Schedule a Furnace Tune-Up

During the fall, have one of the technicians from T.E. Spall & Son come to your home to inspect and maintain your furnace. At your annual tune-up appointment, our team will inspect your system inside and out, ensuring that it’s functioning at its optimal level and ready to serve you for the winter. During this appointment, we will also inspect the system for potential repairs that you should have done before the heating season starts. This will help to prevent a breakdown when you need your system the most.

4. Check Your Thermostat

A programmable thermostat is an important part of keeping your home efficient and comfortable in the winter. If you don’t have one, consider installing one. If you do, check to ensure it doesn’t need a fresh battery. Then, switch your programming for winter before you turn on your furnace for the year.
