When to Start Preparing Your Air Conditioner for Use

The days are getting longer and soon enough the summer heat will be upon us. Preparing your air conditioner before the heat arrives is a good idea. This makes spring the perfect time to test your AC unit and prepare it for cooling season.

Preparing Your AC for Use

The first thing you will want to do when preparing your AC for use is to test it out. You can do this on a warmer spring day. Just turn your unit on for 20-30 minutes. Place your hand over the vents and make sure it is running cold and check the thermostat to make sure the AC is making your home comfortable.

Once you have checked that your AC is running, you will want to make sure it stays that way all summer long. If you didn’t have a maintenance tune-up at the end of last summer, you will want to do so before summer arrives.

Having an expert maintain your system will make sure that it is running both effectively and efficiently. You can also be reassured that your system is safe. Annual maintenance can help prevent emergency calls to your HVAC team and prolong the life of your AC.

There are also a few small maintenance tips you can do yourself however, these shouldn’t replace a full tune-up.

  • Replace your AC filters. Clean filters will help with maximum air flow.
  • Hose off your outside unit. Remove any debris that is around your unit.
  • Check that your drainage pipe is not blocked. If it is you will need to have it unclogged before you use your unit regularly.
  • Make sure your thermostat is working and switch out the batteries if necessary.

What to Do if Your AC Unit is Not Working

If you switch your unit on only to find it is not working, you will want to check your thermostat first. Make sure the thermostat is switched over to cool and your fan is on auto.
